29th of October - World Stroke Day

The World Stroke Day takes place every year at 29th of October. The aim of the World Stroke Day is to raise in the world about stroke. The World Stroke Organization is. was established in October 2006 through the merger of the International Stroke Society and the World Stroke Federation with the recognition that stroke should be represented at global level by a single voice and with broad-based representation. Today WSO has around 4000 individual members and over 60 society members representing 50,000 stroke specialists across 85 different countries as well as patient organizations. The WSO mission is to reduce the global burden of stroke through prevention, treatment and long term care.

One is Six will get a stroke in their lifetime. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability accounting
for 1 in 10 deaths and a total of 44 million years of healthy life lost each year. Stroke can happen to anyone at any time and affects everyone: survivors, family, friends, workplaces and communities. Stroke is preventable. The Stroke Alliance For Europe presented a report http://www.safestroke.eu/burden-of-stroke/ to the European Comission in May 2017, showing the situation of the stroke survivors in Europe. In this report there is a call for rehabilitation since many needs are not given attention in the different European countries and services are lacking.

On World Stroke Day this year we will be focused on stroke prevention raising awareness of stroke risks and demonstrating the steps we can all take- as individuals, professionals or decision makers - to prevent stroke. Over 90% of strokes are linked to 10 key risk factors. By taking steps to address the causes of stroke at individual and population level, we have the power to reduce the human, social and economic costs of stroke. http://www.worldstrokecampaign.org/about-the-world-stroke-campaign.html
